How to Pair Your COLMI Smart Ring with the App (Step-by-Step)

You have unboxed your new ring, slipped it on, and now you are staring at a phone screen wondering why nothing is happening. Take a breath — you are almost certainly two or three small steps away from a working device.

Learning how to pair your COLMI smart ring with the app is the single most important thing you will do with it, because until that connection is made, the ring cannot show you a step count, a heart rate reading, or a night of sleep data. Everything the ring records lives on the phone, and the app is the bridge.

This guide walks you through the whole process in order, from charging the ring before you begin, right through to what to do when the app stubbornly refuses to find your device. It is written for UK owners, and it applies to the whole COLMI ring range — whether you have picked up a Colmi R02 Smart Ring as a first wearable or a Colmi R10 Smart Ring with the fuller sensor set.

Set aside about ten minutes. Most of that is charging time.

What You Need Before You Start

Pairing fails far more often because of preparation than because of a faulty ring. Before you touch the app, make sure you have all of the following ready:

  1. The ring and its charger. COLMI rings ship with a small charging dock or cradle and a USB cable. You will need it in step one.
  2. A phone running a reasonably recent operating system. Most COLMI rings require Android 6.0 or later, or iOS 10 or later. Very old handsets may connect but sync unreliably.
  3. Bluetooth 5.0 support on the phone. Nearly every phone sold in the UK in the last six or seven years has this.
  4. A stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. The app needs to download itself and often needs to fetch a firmware file for the ring during first setup.
  5. The paperwork from the box. The user manual or the card inside the packaging tells you the exact companion app to install, usually with a QR code. This matters — see step two.
  6. About fifteen minutes where you are not going to walk away. Firmware updates fail badly if the phone and ring drift apart mid-transfer.

One more thing worth saying plainly: take the ring off your finger and put it on a table for the setup process. It is easier to see the charger contacts, and easier to keep it close to the phone.

Step 1: Charge Your Ring Fully Before Pairing

This is the step most people skip, and it causes more failed pairings than anything else.

A smart ring arrives from the factory in a deep sleep or shipping mode, and it often arrives with a battery somewhere between empty and about a third full. A ring with very little charge will either not broadcast a Bluetooth signal at all, or will broadcast it so weakly that the app finds it, starts connecting, and then drops out halfway through.

  1. Sit the ring into its charging dock. The metal contacts on the inside of the ring must line up with the pins in the dock.
  2. Plug the cable into a standard USB port — a laptop port, or a low-output phone charger. Avoid fast chargers and high-output car chargers.
  3. Look for the charging indicator. On most COLMI rings a small light glows or a tiny animation appears when contact is made. If nothing lights up, rotate the ring in the dock. The contacts only align one way round.
  4. Leave it for 60 to 90 minutes. Most COLMI rings charge fully in that window.
  5. Take the ring out of the dock. It should now be awake and discoverable.

If the ring shows no sign of life after half an hour in the dock, wipe the inner contacts and the dock pins with a dry cloth or a cotton bud. Manufacturing residue and finger grease both insulate surprisingly well.

Step 2: Download the Correct Companion App

COLMI does not use a single app across every product, and this trips people up constantly. The ring in your hand is designed to talk to one specific companion app, and a similar-looking app from another brand will simply never find it.

  1. Find the card or manual that came in the box. It names the app and usually carries a QR code.
  2. Scan the QR code with your phone camera, or search the app name exactly as printed in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  3. Check the developer name and the screenshots before you install. There are copycat apps with near-identical names.
  4. Install it, then open it once before you go any further so it can finish its first-run setup.

Do not guess. If the card is missing from your box, contact the retailer you bought from rather than installing the first plausible-looking app you find. Installing the wrong app and then pairing to it partially can leave the ring in a confused state that needs a reset to clear.

Step 3: Turn On Bluetooth and Grant the App Its Permissions

Here is the thing that catches out almost every Android user at least once: Bluetooth alone is not enough. Android requires location permission before an app is allowed to scan for nearby Bluetooth devices. This is a privacy rule baked into Android itself, not something COLMI has chosen. If you deny it, the app's scan will run and find absolutely nothing, with no error message to explain why.

Work through this list:

  1. Turn Bluetooth on in your phone's quick settings or main settings.
  2. Turn location services on at the system level.
  3. Open the app and accept every permission prompt it shows you — Bluetooth, location, and on Android often "nearby devices" as a separate item.
  4. On iPhone, also check that the app is allowed to send notifications, if you want call and message alerts on the ring later.
  5. On Android, go into the app's settings entry and disable battery optimisation for it. Android will otherwise put the app to sleep in the background and your data will sync in unpredictable bursts.
  6. Turn off any Bluetooth devices nearby that you are not using — car kits, earbuds sitting in an open case, a second smartwatch. A crowded Bluetooth environment genuinely slows down discovery.

If you accidentally denied a permission, you will usually need to grant it from the phone's app settings page rather than from inside the app, because most apps only ask once.

Step 4: Pair the Ring Through the App, Not Bluetooth Settings

This is the single most common mistake, so it gets its own section.

Do not go into your phone's Bluetooth settings and try to pair the ring from there. Smart rings, like most fitness wearables, use Bluetooth Low Energy, and they are designed to be claimed by their companion app. If you pair from the phone's settings menu, one of two things happens: either the ring does not appear at all, or it appears and connects at the system level — which then blocks the app from claiming it properly.

The correct sequence is:

  1. Open the companion app.
  2. Create an account or sign in, if the app asks. Some COLMI apps allow local-only use without an account; others require one to enable cloud backup of your health data.
  3. Find the option to add or bind a device. It is normally on the main screen or in a device or profile section.
  4. Choose the device type if prompted — ring rather than watch.
  5. Let the app scan. Hold the ring within about 20cm of the phone while it does.
  6. Your ring will appear in the list, usually as a model code with a short string of characters after it. Tap it.
  7. Confirm the pairing. Some models ask you to tap a confirmation in the app; some ask you to place the ring against the phone; some pair silently.
  8. Wait for the app to report that the device is connected before you touch anything else.

If several similar devices appear in the list, the one with the strongest signal is almost always yours. Move well away from other wearables and scan again if you are unsure.

Step 5: Let the First Sync and Firmware Update Finish

Once the ring is bound, the app will usually do two things immediately: pull the ring's current state, and check whether a newer firmware version is available.

Let both finish. A firmware update on a ring typically takes two to five minutes, and during that window you should:

  • Keep the ring and phone within arm's length of each other.
  • Keep the app open and on screen. Do not switch to another app or lock the phone.
  • Do not put the ring back on the charger mid-update.
  • Do not turn Bluetooth off, even briefly.

An interrupted firmware update is one of the few things that can genuinely leave a ring unresponsive, and recovering from it usually means a full reset. It is worth five minutes of patience.

When the update completes the ring may restart on its own and briefly disconnect. That is normal. Give it thirty seconds to reappear in the app.

Step 6: Set Up Your Profile and Choose What the Ring Tracks

Your ring calculates calories, stride length, and several other figures from your body data. If you skip this, the numbers will be generic and you will quietly wonder for weeks why your step count and calorie burn look odd.

  1. Enter your height, weight, age, and sex in the profile section.
  2. Set your daily step goal and, if offered, a sleep goal.
  3. Switch on continuous heart rate monitoring if you want it — be aware this shortens battery life noticeably.
  4. Switch on sleep tracking, and check whether your model needs it enabled manually.
  5. Enable blood oxygen monitoring if your model supports it. On a feature-rich model such as the COLMI R11 Smart Ring, there are usually several optional sensors that are off by default.
  6. Choose your units. UK owners normally want metric, or stone and pounds for weight, and the app will otherwise default to whatever its region setting suggests.
  7. Set notification preferences if your ring supports vibration alerts.

Wear the ring for a full day and night before you judge its accuracy. The first 24 hours of data from any wearable is the least reliable data it will ever produce.

Pairing Problems: Causes and Fixes

If something has gone wrong, work down this list. They are ordered by how often they turn out to be the culprit.

Problem: The app scans but finds nothing

Likely cause: the ring is flat, asleep, or location permission is denied.

Fix: put the ring on charge for 30 minutes and try again. Then check that location services are on and that the app has location and nearby-devices permission. On Android this fixes the majority of cases. If still nothing, restart the phone — Bluetooth stacks do get stuck.

Problem: The ring appears but pairing fails or times out

Likely cause: the ring is already bound to another phone or another app.

Fix: a ring can only be bound to one device at a time. If you paired it to a partner's phone, an old handset, or the wrong app, unbind it there first. If you cannot access that phone, reset the ring (see below).

Problem: It connects, then drops out within minutes

Likely cause: Android battery optimisation, or low charge.

Fix: exclude the app from battery optimisation and any "deep sleep" or app-hibernation feature your phone manufacturer adds on top of Android. Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and OnePlus phones are all aggressive about this. Then charge the ring fully.

Problem: It pairs but no data appears

Likely cause: sync has not been triggered, or sensors are switched off.

Fix: open the app, pull down on the main screen to force a sync, and check that the sensors you expect are enabled in device settings. Data on a ring is stored locally and only appears in the app after a sync.

Problem: It worked, then stopped after a phone update

Likely cause: the OS update reset the app's permissions.

Fix: recheck Bluetooth, location, nearby devices and background activity permissions. Major Android and iOS updates frequently revoke these.

Problem: Nothing works at all and the ring seems dead

Likely cause: charging contact failure, or a genuine hardware fault.

Fix: clean the contacts, try a different USB port and cable, and leave it charging for two hours. If there is still no response, the ring needs replacing under warranty — contact the retailer you bought it from.

How to Unpair and Re-Pair Your Ring

Sometimes the cleanest fix is to start over. Do it in this order, because doing it backwards leaves the ring bound to a phone that no longer has the app:

  1. Open the companion app.
  2. Go to the device or profile section.
  3. Choose the option to unbind, unpair, or remove the device. Do this first, while the app is still installed.
  4. Go into your phone's Bluetooth settings and remove or "forget" the ring if it is listed there.
  5. Restart your phone.
  6. Reopen the app and run through the pairing steps again from step four above.

If you have already deleted the app, or you are trying to pair a ring that was previously used by someone else, put the ring on its charger for a few seconds while starting the pairing scan. On many models, placing the ring in and out of the dock wakes it and makes it discoverable again even when it thinks it is still bound elsewhere.

Keeping the Connection Stable Afterwards

Once you are paired, a few habits keep it that way:

  • Open the app at least once a day. Rings store several days of data locally, but the memory is finite, and the oldest readings get overwritten.
  • Leave Bluetooth on permanently. Toggling it saves almost no phone battery and guarantees gaps in your data.
  • Keep the app updated, and accept firmware updates when the app offers them — most fix real connection bugs.
  • Do not pair the ring to a second phone "just to try it". Each new binding unbinds the last.
  • Keep the phone within about ten metres during the day. Bluetooth Low Energy range drops sharply through walls.
  • If you swim or shower with the ring, dry the contacts before charging.

Smaller models such as the Colmi R06 Smart Ring hold a smaller battery, so a daily sync habit matters even more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pair my COLMI smart ring with two phones?

No. Smart rings bind to one phone at a time. To move it to a new phone, unbind it in the app on the old phone first, then pair it fresh on the new one.

Why does the app need my location to find the ring?

Android treats Bluetooth scanning as something that could reveal your location, so it requires location permission before any app is allowed to scan. The app is not tracking where you are — it simply cannot see Bluetooth devices without that permission granted.

How long should pairing take?

Under a minute, once the ring is charged and permissions are granted. If the scan runs for more than two minutes without finding anything, stop and check charge and permissions rather than waiting it out.

Do I need an internet connection to use the ring day to day?

Not for basic syncing — the ring talks to the phone over Bluetooth. You will need data for the initial app download, for firmware updates, and for cloud backup if the app offers it.

My ring paired but the step count looks wrong. Is it faulty?

Almost always no. Check that your height, weight and age are entered in the profile, and give it a couple of days. Rings count steps from wrist-free hand movement, so they read differently from a watch, and they need a full day of wear to calibrate sensibly.

Getting the Most From Your Ring

Pairing a COLMI smart ring really comes down to four things: charge it first, install the app named in your box, grant Bluetooth and location permissions, and pair from inside the app rather than from your phone's Bluetooth menu. Get those right and the rest follows in under a minute.

If you have worked through every step above and your ring still refuses to connect, hold on to the box and get in touch with the retailer you bought from — a ring that will not pair after a full charge and a clean install is usually a hardware issue rather than a setup one, and it should be covered.

And if your ring is an older model that has always been temperamental about staying connected, it may simply be showing its age. Newer models in the range, such as the Colmi R12 Smart Ring, use more recent Bluetooth hardware and hold a connection considerably better across a normal day. The Colmi R07 Smart Ring is another reliable option, with UK delivery and prices in £.
